One of the Bridge Project group activities discusses the gradient vector in the context of the topographic map of a particular hill. Various paths on the hill are discussed in the first article listed below, which in turn inspired the second article. This latter article was originally written as a Mathematica notebook, which is also available below, and which contains the code used to draw the figures, as well as some comments on the technical aspects of their construction.
