The NSF-funded Vector Calculus Bridge Project seeks to "bridge the gap" between the way mathematicians on the one hand, and physical scientists and engineers on the other, do vector calculus. We believe the way to do this is to emphasize the geometry of vector calculus. We have developed guided group activities for both mathematics and physics classrooms to do just that; Instructor's Guides to accompany them are under development.
This workshop will teach participants how to use our materials, including discussions of the motivation behind their development. The workshop is primarily aimed at those interested in actually using our materials in the (mathematics or physics) classroom, but anyone interested in our approach to teaching vector calculus is encouraged to apply. Prior knowledge of vector calculus is not necessarily an advantage (and is certainly not required!), although some prior exposure would be helpful. Participants will be provided with copies of our materials, including the Instructor's Guides.
The costs of housing and meals in Corvallis will be covered with NSF funding, but participants or their institutions are responsible for the costs of transportation to and from Corvallis. The workshop proper is being scheduled for three full days, from 6/25/05 to 6/29/05. Participants should plan to arrive by dinner time 6/25 if possible for a get-acquainted dinner; accommodation for four nights will be provided.
This year, for the first time, we plan to involve both physical scientists and mathematicians, and hope to facilitate an enlightening dialog.
Application Procedure:
Space is limited, and participants will be selected based on their statement of interest and expected impact. The statement may include details of relevant teaching experience, and the individual's and/or department's willingness to consider adopting our materials.
We do not expect to begin processing applications until April 15, 2005. If you need a response before then, please let us know and we'll do our best. We will continue to accept applications so long as space is available.
To apply, please complete the online application form; if you have any difficulty with this form, you may instead send us the information listed here.
Further information will be posted here as it becomes available. Please don't hesitate to contact either of us with any questions if you are interested in participating.
