Most scientists normally associate appropriate units with each quantity in an equation. Many symbols commonly refer to particular physical quantities, with the corresonding units. By default, x and y are lengths. But one can not equate a length with a length squared!
This equation would be better written as y=kx2.
The constant k is needed not for generality, but so that the units
match!
